The Art of Intuitive Eating
Our lives,
so seemingly small,
ripple out
to the whole universe
as tiny whispers
like the sounds
of butterfly wings,
and the clear voice
of the living truth.

Kicking the Habit - Better Than Coffee
A surprise came our way a few weeks ago when I mixed up a frothy drink of bee pollen and MSM powder. The result? Something that tasted a lot like coffee with that same bitter sweetness and flavor (with fragrant overtones from the pollen), but without any of the drawbacks. This drink gives a real hit of energy—real energy—the kind that actually builds the body, not a false surge that diminishes strength.

Rex enjoys a mug sweetened with a little almond milk and agave for a coffee-esque pick-me-up. We've found that various bee pollens have different tastes, just like honey. Some are more fruity or flowery, others more bitter. All are delicious!

Better Than Coffee
Ingredients (serves 2):
2-3 cups pure water
2-4 tablespoons Bee Pollen
1 tablespoon MSM powder

Blend until pollen is completely dissolved. (We pre-grind ours in a coffee mill.) Enjoy!

We get our pollen from Mountain Rose Herbs. Their bee pollen powder is ready to use and is slightly bitter, which makes it perfect for a coffee type flavor. The pollen pellets are sweeter, almost fruity by comparison. Our MSM comes from Natural Zing.

NOTE: It is recommended by health experts to start with a single nugget of pollen to make sure there are no allergic reactions, and to begin with smaller amounts of MSM until the body is accustomed to taking larger doses.

A Little Story: Kicking the Habit!

I wish we'd known about this drink years ago when I struggled again and again to give up coffee. Rex had already stopped drinking the dark brew long before, so he wasn't faced with the challenges of withdrawal—those none-too-pleasant headaches and tiredness.

We'd gone from buying cheap grocery store coffee to better grade brands, then switched to organic fair trade and shade grown varieties. The organic coffee was so much easier on the body, but after awhile even the organic coffee would make my liver ache. I knew I was doing bodily harm to myself, but couldn't stop.

I was finally able to quit this addiction for good after we adopted a 100% raw food diet four years ago. Within a couple of weeks of eating this way the desire for coffee effortlessly fell away, and I've not felt the siren call since then. But... we still like the taste! So when we discovered this unusual combination of bee pollen coupled with MSM powder, we were delighted.

Bee pollen is considered a “perfect food”, containing every amino acid, enzyme, mineral, vitamin, (and more) that the body needs for optimum health. MSM is a naturally-occurring form of dietary sulfur that is beneficial for rebuilding collagen, connective tissue, joints, skin and nails, and acts as an antiinflammatory. It also makes tissues more permeable so that nutrients can move deep into the cell and push toxins out. This may be why adding MSM to bee pollen, so laden with nutrients, enhances the overall effect.

For us, the combination of these two ingredients creates a synergy of vitality, a drink that boosts stamina at a core level. Because of the extraordinary work that bees do to gather the pollen, we are deeply grateful and indebted to them. We often have our first dose in the morning after our smoothie, or have one later in the day and quickly feel the nutrients vibrating for hours, deep in our cells.

Orcas Sing On another note, we've recently learned about the LiveH2O Concert For The Living Waters celebrations happening this weekend - from June 19-21. This is a unprecedented, interactive, Internet broadcast and worldwide event that is taking place at thirty gathering places around the globe with the intention to help heal the earth's water (and us) through music, prayer, chanting, green technology, arts, and other events. Instead of using force to change the world (which hasn't worked for centuries), people will be tuning in to love, and the healing frequency of 528Hz! The site shares with us how we can participate at home.

Rex and I will be having our own celebration at the Orca Sing here on the island on June 20 along with several hundred people with music and singing to the whales. This annual summer solstice event honors the orcas who inhabit our waters. They are, to us, a truly evolved species, and bring love and a high state of consciousness wherever they travel. Our resident pods almost always make an appearance at this event. It's deeply moving, breathtakingly beautiful, and exciting to have our “brothers” respond to our call and come to be with us!

Energizing our bodies with nutritious foods, healing the planet's waters, being with the whales, and rising up with people around the world with strength and conviction to meet the challenges of the day, feels like the blossoming of a new age, and this has our hearts filled and singing!

Thanks for being here, and see you next week with Fresh Spinach Salad with Beets and Herbed Beet-green Pesto.
